Cethan is the Ademic word for "mercenary" [1], but with a much better connotation. Adem mercenaries are renowned for their prowess throughout Temerant. They are paid two or three jots a day, twenty times what a normal mercenary gets[2]. Cethan pride themselves on returning a full 80 percent of their pay to their school [3].

Ketan

The Ketan is the method through which the Cethan remain fit and learn to fight. The Ketan is a dance-like strech, comparable to a martial arts kata, consisting of over a hundred poses named after various actions, such as "Grandmother Gathers" and "Bargeman at the Dock" [4]. The slower the Ketan is performed, the harder it becomes. There are many schools of thought in Ademre on how the Ketan should be practiced, but the most common school of thought is the Latantha.

Lethani

In other countries, the Lethani is rumored to be a secret art by which the Adem remain silent and use their words to increase their fighting strength. In reality, the Lethani is a complex moral code that all Adem study.
