Elxa Dal was the Master Sympathist at the University while Kvothe was a student. In contrast to his actual demeanor, he is often described as looking like an evil magician[1][2][3], and is the only master comfortable in his formal robes.[3]

In Adept Sympathy, a class for Arcanum students, Dal starts by teaching them how to calculate the necessary formulas quickly and instinctively, and then teaches them skills through competitions known as "duels".

Dal recommends that Kvothe leave the University the term after the trial.[4]
